SUMMARY:TENS Unit Training- Non pharmcological help for labor
DESCRIPTION:A new way of relieving pain in childbirth involves the use
  of a TENS unit—transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation—which
is commonly used during labor by women in Great Britain and Sweden. In
the U.S., TENS units have been used for years by physical therapists
in their rehabilitation of injured patients.\nA TENS unit can make a p
atient more comfortable in labor by using mild electrical stimulation
to increase the release of the body’s natural pain-relieving substan
ces, and by blocking the nerve pathways that cause labor pains. The un
it and pads are applied to the lower back and attached to a small batt
ery-operated stimulator which the patient holds and controls. A tingli
ng sensation is felt at regular intervals, and the woman can adjust th
e amount of stimulation to her own preference.\nObstetric TENS has bee
n found to be an effective technique for pain control in over 80 perce
nt of births. Many studies have been done in Europe with marked succes
s, especially for back pain in labor. There are no known harmful effec
ts to mother or baby. The only women who should not use TENS during la
bor are those with a cardiac pacemaker, those with a pre-term labor, t
hose with broken skin where the pads would attach and those with a sei
zure disorder or undiagnosed sources of pain.\n\nFor more information
