Every minute, a woman dies in childbirth. In total, that’s more than 500,000 women each year—and 90 percent of the time, their deaths are preventable. After struggling to deliver her own first child, Christy Turlington Burns came across statistics like those, and made a decision to join the global fight against maternal death. So for the last two years, camera in hand, the public-health advocate and former model has traversed the globe, chronicling the stories of mothers in search of medical help.
