So here’s my final take: Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein don’t believe that every one of us should have a home birth. Lots of people (mistakenly) thought that this was the message of the first Business of Being Born, but this is not the message of the films. Instead, the message is this: Each woman has a fundamental right and ability to choose the type of birth that is right for her, and what is “right” will vary from woman to woman.

As a childbirth educator and doula, I can advocate for doulas and birth centers all day long but having these experiences brought to mothers from a neutral third party helps moms understand why we recommend these alternatives to the normal treatment of labor in the medical model of care in the United States.

This is what I love about these DVD documentaries: we take responsibility for our own actions, do the research, and decide for ourselves. The filmmakers don’t prescribe a solution; instead, they present the stories of women who have attempted VBAC and “failed,” and women who have attempted VBAC and succeeded. They give us the information from all sources – OBs, midwives, women who have had Cesareans – that empowers us to make the right decision for ourselves, and for that I give them a standing ovation. As an activist, I found myself left with a renewed sense of action or purpose, a desire to do more and help more so that all mamas and babies have the opportunity to experience birth as the positive, loving and intimate experience it was meant to be as well as a deeper understanding of the crisis surrounding our medical model of birth. Since the birth of my son I have trained to become a Doula, and I consider myself an advocate for women during the childbearing years. Notice I didn’t say “for natural childbirth”, or “for homebirth”. I strongly believe that every woman should be able to deliver their baby how they choose – and that women deserve to have all the information they need to make those decisions.
