New AAP Policy Statement - Hospital Stay for Healthy Term Newborns
AAP has released a new Policy Statement – Hospital Stay for Healthy Term Newborns. There are 16 minimum criteria recommendations for hospital discharge. One of those is that “the infant has completed at least 2 successful consecutive feedings,with assessment to verify that the infant is able to coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing while feeding.”

I just read over the new guidelines-- I'll be interested to see what people think. For me, the hospital staph infection rate is reason enough to leave quickly-- but it is essential to have people lined up to help you at home (ie. post-partum doula, a lactation consultant's phone number, and of course a pediatrician). It's also good to make sure you educated yourself about nursing and infant care.
It would be great for every new mother to be assigned a liaison to make sure everything is working out-- rather than keeping women in the hospital and trying to assess the home situation.
