new to the site (but not yet pregnant!)
Hello!
Just wanted to introduce myself...my name is Lisa, I currently live in LA (grew up in NY) with my husband and work as a registered nurse in Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU). Ever since Women's Studies classes in college, I've always planned on having a baby with a midwife, but after seeing The Business of Being Born last year, I'm now determined to birth at home. The movie actually made me feel outraged at how badly (most) hospitals and doctors deal with normal birth, and I feel like all women who are ever planning on having children should be required to see this movie!
I'm not sure if I should be surprised or not, but as a NICU nurse, it appears that I am in the minority when it comes to my ideas about birth. My co-workers will literally tell me that I'm crazy, and will inevitably pull out a story of a baby they once treated that was in the NICU due to complications from a home birth. I, of course, gently remind them that their line of reasoning is deeply flawed, considering that 99.99999% of our patients are born in hospitals, and sometimes the reason they're admitted is because of complications during the birth.
Even though I'm not yet pregnant (and probably won't start having kids for a few years), the topic of home birth really interests me, and I feel compelled to get involved in some way. Until I figure out how to do that, however, I will continue to debate with my skeptical co-workers and encourage them to watch the movie.
I look forward to reading more about this topic through this site.

Welcome! I'm not a nurse, just a mom passionate about NCB. I didn't have a homebirth but a successful BC birth, and I am strongly supportive of homebirth. I know how hard it is when other people don't understand your point of view. Keep your sense of humor and keep educating yourself. Stay strong! You are in a unique position to educate others.
