I am brand new here and due to have my 6th baby in 5 weeks. My previous births have all been at home with midwives. (1 land birth and 4 water births) I tend to have prolonged labours which usually end up in a hemorrhage of some kind. My midwives prefer I have a hospital birth but will attend if I choose a homebirth. I could be wrong, but I think my prolonged labours are one of the reasons for the hemorrhages. Now, I believe the labours are long (16 hours for the last one) due to emotional issues with my mother. With baby number 4 my mother was furious because I didn't tell her I was in labour. The reason I didn't do that was because with baby number 3 she dropped over to the house while I was birthing. She wanted to see the birth and believed that if I have a homebirth then she can attend. We didn't answer the door and she then went around to the back of the house and peeked in the windows. It was terrible.
When I called her the last time I had a baby she screamed and yelled at me. She then came over and had to be removed by the police due to her behaviours. All because she believes grandparents have rights. UGH! So, I think my labours are prolonged because I am scared to call after the birth and tell her the baby has been born. Then I hemorrhage from the stress of that. (well, my opinion on why I keep bleeding like that)
Well, baby number 6 is due March 6th and this time around my mother has no idea when I am due and I haven't talked to her for more than 8 months. Keeping her out of my life is a good thing for me.
I am taking extra iron and vitamin K to help prevent a hemorrhage but would like any other ideas just incase the reasons are not emotional. Is it possible that the fear of my mother has something to do with this? I will not be telling her about the baby's birth until I am ready and the baby may be months old before I actually make that call. Do any of you have any advice for me regarding post-partum hemorrhaging? I really want to try and prevent an episode of this if possible.
I have read that vitamin D is important for effective uterine contractions. Some times labor progresses more slowly due to weaker contractioons. Vitamin D is absorbed from exposure to sunlight, being outdoors for an hour each day. Ask your midwife about vitamin D supplementation.
Avoiding stress and emotional tension is an excellent approach. Tense muscles inhibit the progress of labor.
It is important to have a strategy planned for the possibility of heavy bleeding--along with the preventive measures you are taking.

I'm not so sure that the length of laboring does correspond to hemorrhaging. My first labor was rather short--about 8 hours that I knew of, but probably more and I just didn't realize it. (by not realizing it, I mean that I was having back pain, and my doctor told me I was dilated to a 6-7 at my 40 wk check up) I bled a lot after that birth, and the med staff were scrambling. My second labor was 14 hours, again back labor. This time I bled a normal amount.
I'm sure that 16 hours feels like a really long time. I know my 14 hours did! But I think that that long is not uncommon. But there's the fact that you've had 5 births, and supposedly they get shorter, right?! :)
Maybe you already have, but research into toning your uterus. Red raspberry leaf tea is supposed to really be good for toning the uterus.
From a metaphysical standpoint, hemorrhaging can reflect the body "excessively crying". Birthing, mothering, safety, trust are all interwoven, so there is a possible connection with the postpartum experience and your relationship with your mother. I do recommend consulting with a natural healthcare practitioner for a full holistic examination.

The medical risks for hemorrhage are
-Precipitous labors(short labors)
-Prolonged pushing phase
-Advanced maternal age
-The use of pitocin
-The use of vaccum and forceps
Emotions can create a longer labor by not allowing yourself to let go and allow labor to happen. Have you tried something like hypnobirthing? It can be very usefull in relaxation and giving your body over to labor. As for the other factors your best bet it to put baby on the breast right away and have medication ready for you in case it is needed.
I have a history (as does my mother) of hemorrhaging after birth so my midwife ran a blood test to see if I had some genetic disorder. I don't recall the name of it (how helpful) because it came back negative. She believed strongly that I had it and had to really push the OBs (who had the ultimate say but I think were less concerned) to have me tested. My mother, back in the day, was told it was an iron deficiency. I am personally making sure I have enough protein (80-85g/day) this time around (due March 6th too btw!). I am hoping it helps.
I'm sorry you've dealt with PPH and are worried about it for this birth. I also had PPH, and it's the only thing making me think twice about a home birth. The pain of labor was nothing compared to the pain of the doctor trying to stop the bleeding (internal massage) or the MONTHS it took me to feel alive. The blood loss really put a cloud on things (trouble nursing, a lot of anxiety, extreme fatigue, etc.).
I've been researching a lot about PPH and it seems like about 90% of them are due to the uterus not contracting quickly enough in the third stage. Nursing the baby ASAP might help. For myself, I had to have pitocin and internal uterine massage. A friend of mine who had a HB with a lay midwife actually ate a piece of her placenta to stop the bleeding. She swears it worked.
I honestly don't know if there's a way to prevent PPH, since coagulation factors are actually a very small percentage of them. But I'm wondering what we could try to make sure the uterus has good tone right afterwards---Is this why some people drink Red Raspberry leaf tea? I don't know. Maybe someone else on this board has a thought on that.

Wow, I would love a 16 hour labor! I am due with my 6th too. My labors are typically 30+ hours and always posterior. :( Anyway, I hemorrhaged after my twin birth cesarean very badly. I lost a lot of blood and the doctor gave me nothing to gain back my healthy blood count so I could feel good and take care of my twins. I took liquid Chlorophyll and that helped tremendously! I take it now even before labor (I have 10 weeks to go). Just to keep my blood count high. I stay away from iron. Also I have heard experiences of the herb of Shepherd's purse being use to stop hemorrhaging should it happen. Not sure if it can be used immediately after birth as a preventative. I will have to look into this as we are planning an unassisted home birth. Blessings for a peaceful birth! ~Shauna
