This Program Could Greatly Improve Pregnancy Health and Needs Your Help

This subject is very dear to my heart, and I have a huge passion to make this program a success.  I hope you can offer your suggestions and help.

In my second pregnancy I experienced multiple complications that had me on and off of bed rest from 27 weeks on.  When my son was born (over 3 weeks early), he too had health problems that put him in the NICU and sent us for weekly blood draws, multiple appointments with specialists, caused lots of stress and worry and eventually led us to an inconclusive diagnosis.

When he was only a few months old, I found out that he was severely deficient in vitamin D.  Which means I was also deficient in my pregnancy.  Now that I've been actively researching the connections between vitamin D and pregnancy / baby health, I'm realizing that much of what we went through (and are still going through) could have potentially been avoided if my vitamin D status had been checked and any deficiency corrected early on in my pregnancy.

Vitamin D deficiency is a major problem, even in sunny areas such as my home of San Diego.  Up to 80% of pregnant women are deficient or low in vitamin D.  Screening is NECESSARY during pregnancy to detect this deficiency, to adequately address and correct it, and to protect both the mother's health as well as the baby's.  Issues such as preeclampsia, gestational and type 1 diabetes, preterm birth, prenatal and newborn infections, and even the risk of cesarean can all be affected by vitamin D.

A non-profit that I have been working with called GrassrootsHealth is soon to launch their 'Protect Our Children NOW!' program to educate health care providers and parents about the importance of vitamin D, and to provide routine vitamin D screening to pregnant women and infants.

We are looking for individuals, organizations, and groups who believe in the importance of this subject to endorse the program and "Say you care" to providing vitamin D screening for pregnancy and babies.  It takes just a moment to add your name and fill out the form here: http://grassrootshealth.wufoo.com/forms/m7x3r3/

Big name and large member based organizations, practices, and groups involved in pregnancy, baby, child, and even overall health would really help - so please consider sharing with others you think may also be interested in supporting this cause.  We will also be looking for Advocates to help spread awareness and education about vitamin D, and help with other aspects of the program.  The website is still in progress, so if you would like additional information about the program itself, just let me know and I can send it through email.

If you would like additional research and resources on vitamin D and its relationship to healthy pregnancies and children, please let me know, and I would be happy to share them with you.  If you have questions or would like to have a conversation about vitamin D in general, please feel free to contact me.

If you are interested in being involved in this program beyond a simple endorsement, or in sponsoring, please contact me at jen@grassrootshealth.org.

Again, your endorsement takes only moments and is much appreciated: http://grassrootshealth.wufoo.com/forms/m7x3r3/

Thank you so much for your support!
