I am a Bradley childbirth educator and birth doula (DONA cert.). 3 kids - 2 born OOH and 1 at home. Studying to be a midwife and getting BSM from MCU and one day will be a CPM.

I am a child and family photographer in Atlanta (shutterview.com), and also work as a labor doula (treasurebirth.com) (DONA trained) every couple of months. Glad to be here!

I'm a doula, but I only attend a few births a year because I also run a business www.sofiabean.com and I have three kids. I had my second and third babies with midwives, one in a hospital and one in a birth center that was actually inside a hospital (Norfolk, VA). I wish more women knew they could have midwifery care in a hospital. I think even women who ended up having an epidural or knew they wanted one all along would have better experiences.

Jessica,
In short, a doula is a woman that supports another woman through her labor and birth. Many times, we meet with our clients and get to know them and also try to gain a good idea of what they would prefer to happen during their birth process. We do our very best to ensure that the mother's wishes are upheld as much as possible. Sometimes, we just are there to support their main labor support, such as a husband. We can offer advice about position changes, massage, and other comfort measures to help a woman through her labor process. Doula in Greek, means a woman who serves. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. It looks as though we have a very experienced group of doulas here!

I am interested about what a doula does. I have very little knowledge about babies, childbirth, etc. and I am starting to learn! This site is so wonderful.

Hello all, I am a Birth Doula and I love it! It is such a blessing to celebrate in the wonderful power and sacred journey of birth.
I look forward to getting to know each of you better.
(I have two children, a son, 5 yrs and a daughter, 17 mo - born in water at home!)
