As time moves forward, 4 of 5 Moms I serve say the BoBB has changed the way they view birth, completely:) I do not even ask Moms if they have seen it now, it is one of the first disclosures they make to me:)

I was about 27weeks pregnant with my third son (who is now almost 19months) when I causally asked my doctor when I good time would be to discuss my birth plan. His reaction which was, and I quote: "You don't have something silly or crazy in there like a water birth do you?" That haunted me for days, weeks even. At about 31weeks, I saw the Business of Being Born. I'd already given birth twice, in a hospital, without pain medication, and wanted to have a natural birth with this baby, but I still wasn't fully informed about my options in my area, and I certainly wasn't informed on the risks of hospital delivery. Needless to say, my doctors comments coupled with watching that awesome documentary started a fire in me that still burns strong. I started looking for midwives in my area and found that Sacramento has only 1 freestanding birth center. I called at about 33weeks asking to be transfered, but unfortunately, because of my insurance or lack thereof (I was uninsured and on Medi-cal), I couldn't transfer that late in my pregnancy. I was so disappointed. I stared looking into homebirth, and was equally disappointed when i found midwife after midwife wouldn't take me so late with medi-cal. I wasn't working, neither was my boyfriend, we were living off our tiny savings and unemployment with 3 other kids, a huge mortgage and bills piling..debt we are still fighting to get out of today, so we couldn't afford even the small fee of 2700 we quoted to continue care and birth at home. I was so devastated to have to go to a hospital, but I decided that through the knowledge I gained through business of being born, I'd make my hospital birth what I wanted it to be. We couldn't afford a doula, but my boyfriend's mother had an unassisted birth with her last baby at home and so I made sure she'd come with us to the hospital. I also, started to get my childbirth education certification through ICEA while I was pregnant. I ended up having a very favorable hospital birth, (especially since I had an awesome nurse and my regular doctor was not on-call) and I am now a childbirth educator, who in time will become a midwife.

Saturday I was interviewed for an hour long feature segment on Home Birth Midwives with WBUR, Boston Radio!! Broadcast date TBA. Of course, I spoke about BOBB and the way the film motivated me to pursue my research for a home birth midwife with renewed inspiration;)

Leading up to my seeing BOBB in a NY movie theater, I had been doing lots of research on home birth. My doula had encouraged me to explore the option, saying that getting admitted into the birthing center at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan (where I had given birth to my first; this was my second pregnancy) was more difficult in 2008 than it had been in 2005. Seeing BOBB definitely "sealed the deal", so to speak, for me, and led me to my amazing midwife, too--Cara Muhlhahn (who was the main midwife in the film).

My husband and I had the honor of "catching" our daughter with 2-year-old big brother watching every moment (Cara didn't quite make it for the birth--through absolutely NO fault of her own as she was across town at another birth--she arrived less than a minute afterwards after risking life and limb trying to make it to us in time, and took amazing care of us!!)

One of the best decisions of our lives has been to give birth at home. I have been so inspired by the passionate women I've had the pleasure of meeting through it all that I have begun training to become a childbirth educator and doula.

I watched BOBB at around 28 weeks and was passionately convinced to birth naturally. We were planning a water birth at a local hospital. At 37 weeks pregnant, I finally got my husband to watch BOBB and after 30 minutes into it, he turned to me and said "We can't go to the hospital! Is it too late to birth at home or a birth center?". We switched providers at 37 weeks to an amazing midwife at "The Birthing Inn", our local stand alone birth center. We had our little girl July 21st and it was an amazing experience. Thank you BOBB for giving us the courage!

To those who have had a Natural birth with a midwife at home or birthing center, I would like to ask a question! What was you greatest obstacle when deciding to have that type of birth, and how did you overcome it? Mine is fear. Mostly, fear that I won't be able to handle it and also that I will tear(I have had epesiatomy(sp?). I know of so many benefits of a natural birth and they def out weight the fear but it's still there. Any advice?

I watched this movie for the 1st time this weekend and loved it. So informative and inspiring. My husband and I are are trying to conceive our 3rd and have been thinking of natural birthing since our 2nd son was born in 07. I am so inspired and encouraged by this movie now I've got to buy it!

After watching this movie we decided to do a natural childbirth at an out of hospital birth center with a midwife. Best decision I have ever made! What an empowering and life changing experience. Next child will be a home birth for sure!
