Comment by Elena Boianoff on Thursday: I read Ina May's "Spiritual Midwifery & Guide to Childbirth" and it cemented my decision to give birth at home. There really was no other option :)

Comment by Cindy Lerner on September 26, 2009 at 6:09pm: I have to say that although I knew a lot of homebirth moms before having a homebirth, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth really opened my eyes to what to expect. Although the birth wasn't anything like I expected, I felt very confident in knowing that I had read and was educated on what was happening to my body. I also loved Spiritual Midwifery. It makes me sad when I see pregnant women reading What to Expect... I want to rip it out of their hands and put one of Ina May's books in its place.

I have to say, the wonderful thing about books as opposed to other ways of gathering information is that they are very private and meditative. I remember first picking up Ina May's Guide to Childbirth in a bookstore, and sitting, entranced for at least an hour, so absorbed in the birth stories and the wisdom she's collected. We can really get to know ourselves through books.

After all the boring books like What to Expect When You're Expecting this was the first preg. book I couldn't put down and read in 2 days straight. It really opened the doors for me to realize how much I had stored in my subconsciousness since childhood--all feelings about birth that I didn't even realize! I highly recommend all preg. women to explore their subconscious in great depth while preg. For example, my mom had reminded me when I was about 7 mths preg. that a doctor had once said I was too small and would have to have a c-section when I got preg (yeah, thanks alot!). I had this fear all during my homebirth labor and shortly after I said the fear aloud to my midwife I quickly went to 10 cent. and delivered easily. Until that point I couldn't believe the baby was ever going to come out...

Comment by Heidi Beth Armstrong on September 18, 2009 at 5:11pm: I read so many fascinating books while I was pregnant. The first incredible one I read was Marie Mongan's Hypnobirthing book. One of my all time fav. pregnancy book (and one that I recommend because it's less common) was a library copy I stumbled upon called Choosing Waterbirth by Lacksmi Bertram. It was more than about waterbirth--yoga, homebirth, etc, every sentence just seemed to ring true, the whole book is full of wise, feminine wisdom. I usually enjoyed the books that were written by women speaking as mothers more than as doctors or professionals. Birthing from Within is also great. Your Vegetarian Pregnancy was so helpful for me in terms of diet. I'm sure there are others I can't think of right now...
