The mission of La Leche League International is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important in the healthy development of the baby and mother.

La Leche League groups meet monthly in over 60 countries around the world. Leaders are mother-volunteers who have been trained and accredited by La Leche League International. Leaders are available for phone and email help, and some Leaders do home visits for moms who are having trouble in the early weeks.

La Leche League philosophy is summarized by these 10 concepts:

-Mothering through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby.
-Mother and baby need to be together early and often to establish a satisfying relationship and an adequate milk supply.
-In the early years the baby has an intense need to be with his mother which is as basic as his need for food.
-Breast milk is the superior infant food.
-For the healthy, full-term baby, breast milk is the only food necessary until the baby shows signs of needing solids, about the middle of the first year after birth.
-Ideally the breastfeeding relationship will continue until the baby outgrows the need.
-Alert and active participation by the mother in childbirth is a help in getting breastfeeding off to a good start.
-Breastfeeding is enhanced and the nursing couple sustained by the loving support, help, and companionship of the baby's father. A father's unique relationship with his baby is an important element in the child's development from early infancy.
-Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced and varied diet of foods in as close to their natural state as possible.
-From infancy on, children need loving guidance which reflects acceptance of their capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings.

The ideals and principles of mothering which are the foundation of LLLI beliefs are further developed in THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, the most comprehensive handbook on breastfeeding and parenting ever published. It has provided needed answers to three generations of nursing mothers on every aspect of breastfeeding. The new Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is now available!  See this link to download chapter 20, the Tear-Sheet Toolkit:  www.llli.org/womanlyartofbreastfeeding

Just thought I'd share that I'm in the pre-application process of becoming a LLL leader! There isn't a group in my community, so I thought I'd see if I could start one. I really hope I can get through the accreditation process!

Okay, so I had just started noticing another plugged duct heading my way, complete with a milk bleb. So I took the advice, sterilized a pin and set to work! It was easier to pick at it when I had some pressure applied to the areola which made the bleb stick out a bit. And oh boy! When I punctured it, I got sprayed in the face with absolutely clear liquid! I was prepared for toothpasty stuff, but that was not the case! And I expressed A TON of this clear liquid out of that one opening while other openings beside and around it expressed little bits of milk. Weird! Anyone know what the clear fluid was? Was it just built up foremilk? Anyways, just thought I'd share ;)

I want to let you know that the new Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is now available and it is fantastic!

It has been completely re-written by three fabulous authors who are LLL Leaders and IBCLCs; Diana West, Diane Weissinger and Teresa Pitman.

There is a section of info sheets in the book that are available to download for free at this link: www.llli.org/thewomanlyartofbreastfeeding

I've been on vacation, but I have a quick tidbit that covers the nicu and the surrogate situations!

Search "Stanford Hands on Pumping" for a video clip about bringing in a full supply with a pump. Dr. Jane Morton did a study at Stanford University that combined pumping with hand expression and the moms were able to collect twice as much milk!

It can be a good idea to rent a hospital grade pump for the first month, then use the purchased pump when milk supply is well established.

The high quality pump brands are Hygeia, Ameda and Medela.

Babies born early need time and TLC. They have a greater chance of not feeding effectively and ending up back in the hospital. Birth Kangaroo Care is essential for these tiny babes. They need help feeding until they can do it on their own.

It is really difficult to collect colostrum with a pump. Hand expression, directly into a spoon or cup works better and can be fed directly to the baby or frozen in vials for later use. Establishing milk supply is really important. Babies can learn to breastfeed even months later, if the milk is there.

You can talk to a health care provider about how to reduce your chances of having another preterm birth. Fish oil, vitamin D and magnesium can all play a role in preventing preterm labor.

okay, I guess that was a few tidbits...

by the way, does anyone know why I can't comment from my phone? I have a blackberry and I can sign in and type the comment, but I can't click the 'comment' button when I am done typing, so my message doesn't go through. Did that at least twice before I remembered it doesn't work...

Thanks,
Emily
