My vote for diapers that fit the widest range is SoftBums: http://www.softbums.com/
since the newborn stage only last a little while, you could purchase enough smalls for one day and wash and dry each night and then you would only need 12-15 regular one size diapers to go a couple of days between washes. We use BumGenius one size mostly and I average 6-8 diaper changes a day...they have fit great since he was two months old - but I don't think they would've fit well before that...

Thanks for all the great info, ladies! Here is my long-winded question: Since I unfortunately have to return to work after my little one is born, CD'ing is going to be a bit of a challenge with daycare. I'm actually quite lucky in that the daycare center we're likely going to use actually supports cloth diapering (most centers won't allow it). They have a very "attachment parenting/environmentally green" philosophy that is hard to find! However, due to this, as well as the fact that my mother will be watching babe 1-2 days per week, I have decided to use pocket diapers, since they are more user friendly. I love the BG 3.0, since they grow with baby, but looking at the pics, the contour of the crotch seems awfully WIDE for a newborn...does anyone with experience with one size or pockets have any input on this? It's kind of a big investment, so I want to make sure I get it right! Thanks so much!

Bonnie, it depends on how often you're willing to wash diapers. When I had 3 in diapers I was washing every day. I started with a small stash of prefolds: 6 for my 3 year-old, 8 for my 18 month-old, and 12 for my newborn, with just a few covers each. I primarily use prefolds and covers so I can reuse the cover if it's not soiled. That helps when you don't have a big stash, and it's less expensive. The covers I use are also one-size so I didn't have to worry about which cover to use for which child. I currently have about 25 medium prefolds and 18 covers for my baby (the older two are out of diapers now) and I only need to wash every 3-4 days. I don't let my stash get used up before washing because I like to have at least a few clean diapers while I'm washing and drying the rest. When I had 2 in diapers I used 18 small prefolds for the baby and 25 medium prefolds for my toddler and used the 18 covers for both of them. I also have about 5-6 one-size pocket diapers that I keep in the diaper bag as my designated stash for when we're out. They're generally easier to use if someone else is watching my kids and may not be familiar with how to use a prefold and cover. I hope that answers your question. If you want more info, just let me know :)

Hey all - upon a request from a friend, I did a post about cloth diapering using Bum Genius if you know of anyone who might have questions. It is my personal blog - no adverts or anything. Just trying to be helpful to those diving into the cloth diapering world :)

Cherylyn - how many CDs would you recommend with 2 kids in cloth? Say a newborn and an almost 2 year old? Sounds like you'd be the woman to ask!

I started using cloth diapers a year ago with a diaper loan from the Cloth Diaper Foundation. I've gradually built up my own stash (mostly prefolds and covers), and I'm ready to send the loaned diapers back! It also helped that two of my kids have potty trained in that time period, and I only have one in diapers now :) With 3 in diapers for a while, we have saved a lot of money by switching to cloth. I love cloth diapers!

I love my pockets, we mainly use BG one size and FB's, the FB seem to look newer longer, but try snapping a diaper on a VERY wiggly baby! BG are my favorite, they almost never leak, fit well, wash well...people complain about babies pulling them off because of the velcro, but I just make sure he is dressed to prevent that...
