The Bummi's covers don't quite fit my skinny kids. I have to overlap the tabs in front, and they tend to fall down or fall off. Friends of mine have used the Bummi's covers without any problems. It must be my kids. My favorite covers are some that I made using the Rita's Rump Pattern. I modified the pattern a bit. If you want to see the covers I made, you can see pictures and descriptions on my blog here: http://mamasandbabies.blogspot.com/2009/07/cloth-diapers-ive-sewn.html If I make more covers in the future I won't use flannel on the top. I'd make the whole thing with PUL instead. If the diaper gets very full the flannel gets soaked, and the flannel is starting to wear out from so much use. PUL would be more durable and wouldn't soak. That was my design error in trying to save money on fabric.

Thanks for all the great info, Sonja! I'm continually amazed by all of the info out there!
Cherylyn, I've been thinking about using prefolds with covers for the newborn stage--what covers do you use? Do you make your own? I've read a lot of good reviews about the Bummi's super whisper wrap covers--have you used these?
Sorry for the 20 questions!

Katie - I have read about the suede cloth interior causing this type of reaction on some babies, you might try a fuzzibunz or perhaps one with an organic material for the inner lining and see if you notice a difference...check http://allaboutclothdiapers.com/ - Autumn has some great reviews on a ton of different diapers and one of her babies had reactions to suedecloth so she has tried a ton of different options.

I have a question if anyone out there can help me! My son has been wearing BG 3.0's since he was 1 month old. Off and on we would notice when we changed him that his lower belly and upper thighs were really red (pretty much everywhere the diaper covers). Not a rash or anything like that just solid red and really warm. We change him frequently so I know it's not because he sits in his diaper too long. So we stripped the diapers (twice actually) and tried again. That didn't help though and the red skin continued. Its not every time but when we would put him in a Earth's Best disposable it would go away immediately. I tried him in a Mommy's Touch diaper but it has yet to be frequent enough to see anything. I am going to continue to monitor and put him in the Earth's Best and Mommy's Touch but wanted to know if anyone else had the same experience? Could he be allergic to the cotton even though Mommy's Touch (as far as I know) is made of the same thing and he isn't having any issues with his clothing? We stripped the BG's again but I'm lost as to what to do since I'm afraid of selling the BG's and getting new ones only to have it happen again with other diapers. He just turned one and they won't test him yet for allergies....any help would be great =)

Thanks, Cherylyn, that helps a lot! I've got a newborn and use BG 3.0 on my 20 mth old. I was planning on using disposables until the BGs fit her better, but we just found out today that she has congenital hip dysplasia and needs a bulky diaper to keep her hip flexed, so as soon as we get home (visiting family now) we'll be trying the CD and hopefully that wide crotch will be great for her! Katie, I'll let you know how they fit my little one!

I have a niece who uses only BG 3.0 diapers and loves them. However, they do not fit her newborn yet, and she's been using disposables temporarily until he's big enough to fit into BG. I think she didn't want to invest in newborn cloth diapers, but I think Sonja's idea sounds great. I was able to use prefolds and covers on my newborn, but it really depends on the cover.

this is also a great affordable choice: http://www.envibum.com/

what I meant to say is that INSTEAD of ALL one-size you could purchase a day's worth of smalls in something like a bum genius or fuzzybunz and then cut down on the total one-size you would need since the baby would need less changes a day after the newborn stage...
