Welcome to the group ‘First Days’. We started this group because those first days after delivery are so very special and very important. Bonding with your baby, recovering from delivery, your baby ‘starts up’ and beginning to breastfeed are just a few things. It is nice to know what happens after delivery and what you can do to make this special time the best experience for you and your family. And to achieve that, you can use all the help you can get. From you partner and family, friends, neighbors, a postpartum doula or information from your doctor, books and the internet.
My own experience (Gea) giving birth to two sons on two different continents within twenty months is the start of my own journey into motherhood and the start of translating a guide that I used in the Netherlands where I delivered my first son.
Upon delivery of my second son in sunny California, I discovered that maternity care and
recovery in the United States was organized in a much different fashion than in the Netherlands. I was amazed by how quickly most new moms in the U.S. are on their own again after delivery. No time to recuperate from the delivery or to learn and get used to the newborn. And no one to teach them the tricks of the trade. In the Netherlands every new mom gets a specialized nurse at home for the first 8 days after delivery. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a postpartum doula at your bed, paid for by the insurance company?
I realized that the Dutch approach I experienced with my oldest son was very special.
And that the book I used then, and used again the second time, would be a great help to moms in the U.S. just as it was for me.
And so the manual The First 8 Days of Being a Mom. How to take care of yourself and your newborn! was born. It is a guide geared towards moms' health and changes as well as that of the newborn.
The First 8 Days of Being a Mom is the translation of the helpful Dutch guide compiled by some of the Netherlands top medical professionals. It has been further reviewed by a wide host of American specialists ranging from Pediatricians and Ob-Gyns (including Mona Saint M.D.) to Midwives and Doulas to incorporate American practices and sensibilities. Editor Melissa Sherman Pearl joined the fray and added some nice touches.

On Sunday May 23rd Gea of The First 8 Days of Being a Mom and Dionna Whitehead of SmartChoices teamed up at the Natural Baby Fair in San Diego. Smart Choices, the makers of Mother's First Day Kit and purveyors of high quality products dedicated to making the new mom's life more comfortable brought an array of product samples for visitors of the fair to see, touch and buy. Gea brought her books and presented her story at the main stage to a select audience. A raffle with as price a complete Mother's First Day's kit including the manual was part of the booth. Anyone who entered a card will get an e-mail with the winner of the kit.

Don't forget to enjoy the ride as much as you can. Preparing is important and it gives you ease of mind to know what is coming. But try to have fun too. Good luck.
