Comment by Meredith Paige Browning Lovell on December 24, 2010 at 12:16pm: We just asked people to kindly keep their opinions to themselves. When that didn't work I was like "It's not something up for discussion and your opinions are not wanted or needed." There were a lot of people who we knew would not be supportive so we just didn't share our birth plans with them. It is hard. My older sister kept saying she was scared I would die but then wanted to be at the birth (I did not invite her). I just kept the negative people away while Talbot was growing and while I labored. My mom was freaked at first but after she met our midwife she was 100% on board and even offered to let us birth at her house. It takes time for some people to adjust and some people still won't change.

Comment by Andrea Felsinger on December 21, 2010 at 10:14am: Everyone around me knew i would be having a homebirth the next time we had a baby, supposedly everyone was fine and trusted my decision, until we got pregnant, and now everyone is freaking out about it! I am not changing my mind, but it would be nice if certain people would accept and support, like my mom... At least my husband is on the same page with me, that is one person I don't think i could handle being against it!

Comment by Andrea Felsinger on November 28, 2010 at 7:20pm: It was fine once we got there. Turns out she was in the middle of moving, and wanted to meet at her new house, but realized that only half her suff was there at the last minute, and ha to run and go get it, in the process, some of her family wanted to help her move, so she stayed and gave them direction of what to pack and put where while she was busy with me. I know she is new and all, and I really have confidence that she knows what she is doing as far as info, prenatals and of course the birth, but she is new to the business end of things, and is lacking to say the least in that area. But we had a long talk and I *think* things are going to work out better. If not, I have plenty of time to find someone else, but for now, I am all about second chances in this instance :)

Comment by Meredith Paige Browning Lovell on November 26, 2010 at 8:09pm: Andrea, How did the appointment turn out? Did you ever end up seeing her? My midwife has only ever canceled or pushed things back when a birth is involved so I don't know how I would handle that situation. I can see how it would be disheartening especially when it is your first time meeting her.

Comment by Andrea Felsinger on November 24, 2010 at 9:34am: am suopposed to meet with the midwfe for the first time today, and I got a message first thig this morning, changing the location (15 minutes further away from my house...), then an hour later wanting to push the time back an hour, and now saying that noon is fine but if I wanted to meet later at like 6:30 or so that is fine with her because she has some family stuff going on (I made sure to ask if she was busy with a birth, if that was the case, it's completely understandable). My husband works overnights, didnt get home until about 9am, and is waiting on me to get done so he can go to sleep. She is really not helping anyone who needs to be on a schedule, and I am wondering if this is going to be a normal occurance with her...

My midwife just completed her apprenticeship but has been a doula for the last 13 years. I honestly couldn't imagine a better woman to have go through this process with us. :) We are in the final stretch, just waiting on baby to make it's debut. This is our first and I feel so blessed to have had such a great care provider.

I think we have found one, she is new, but I have had 4 babies already, and know my body fairly well, so i think she is experienced enough to deal with whatever I might go through. She has attended only about 60 births unattended, but several hundred with a senior midwife in attendance, and has seen and helped remedy quite a bit. So we are happy for now at least. Thanks for the advice!

Comment by Meredith Paige Browning Lovell on November 9, 2010 at 7:31pm: Andrea, I would ask her practices on breech at home, some midwives don't/won't deliver them. Ask if she does vaginal exams or not, our midwife does not but has offered to show my husband and I, so we can check if we get curious. Ask her what would rule you out of home birth, that way you can focus on any "problem" areas that might arise. Her rate of pay, when she wants to be paid by (ours wanted in full by 36weeks but is VERY flexible), and if she works for trade. We have friends who paid their midwife in produce. Also see what would be indicators of a possible transfer, I never asked that until our last appointment and I am 38weeks tomorrow. Good luck!! :)

Comment by Andrea Felsinger on October 30, 2010 at 8:27am: Just got my positive pregnancy test Thursday, and am so excited to plan a homebirth for baby #5. I have already started interviewing midwives, and wanted to know if there were any questions you foound important that might not be at the top of my mind to find out. This my first homebirth, and I am slightly nervous at changing my birthing routine, but know this is going to be great, just want to start off as smoothly as possible. Any help will be appreciated!
