When I told my mother that I was planning on having a home birth, she was nervous. It's amazing how well we daughters know our mothers. I could see her feelings before she said a word, and although I knew she trusted my decisions, I saw the worry.
I explained some of my thoughts and the research I had done, but inevitably just ended up suggesting that she watch The Business of Being Born. I actually went as far as to rent it myself and loan it to her, (as well as my grandmother) and it did the trick!
Not only was she excited about my planned home birth, she became an advocate, passionate about her newly found distaste for "medical" hospital births.
Here we are, Eric, Ella and I, just moments after she was born in our birth room.
One year after birthing at home, my passion for home birth extended to helping educate and empower women and families about their choice to birth at home. I created a site in the hope that more might discover their options and own their birth experience.
Bring Birth Home is a site compiled of home birth stories, general home birth information and a blog, equip with a 9 Steps to Home Birth Prep Newsletter, which I wrote based on the days of planning my own home birth.
Our second baby, sweet little boy Lucan, was born at home in water June 30th, 2011. His birth has only reinvigorated my commitment to supporting families.
Thank you so much Ricki and Abby for The Business of Being Born, and this awesome social networking site! I have met SO many fantastic expectant moms and mothers here, some of which I have created lasting friendships with and even met in person!

...or full blown sob and sniffle kind of…

My daughter makes a lot of her own decisions.
She is a 2 and four month old toddler.
But I'm not holding her to that. She doesn't know how young she is. She knows that she simply "is." My daughter is more than a toddler. She is a human being.
What drives a toddler's decision making…

If you would have told me ten years ago where I would be today, a well-adjusted mother of a lovely daughter with a bun in the oven, engaged to a handsome, hardworking and successful man, I would have laughed in your face.
In fact, in the current deep state of teenage angst I was submerged in at the time, I more likely would have told you to f*ck off, promptly spinning on the thick black heels of my knee high leather boots. With a tear cresting over my…
