Profile Information

I am a 23 year old a mother of 2 and we are expecting a third child on April 18, 2010. I have 2 boys; a 13 month old and a 5 year old. I am recently married and together with my loving husband of 8 years. We are very excited to have a new addtion to our family. I work as a hair stylist and am going to school for pre-nursing. Eventually my goal is to become a CNM and open a birthing center. I had my second son naturally in a hospital. I really would like to have a water birth for this baby, but its not an option right now at the hospital where I live. I would like to find out more information on what is possible for me to have a home birth. Econmically its hard for us so i'm not sure if I could pay for the care of a midwife, but I am really trying to make it happen. After I watched The Business of being born it made me think about trying to have another natural labor at the hospital. I would just love to have a home birth. My boys are very active and keep me busy. I am interested in holistic healing and natural birthing. I would love to meet other mothers to share stories and advice with!

Giving birth Naturally in a Hospital Setting

I didn't think it would be possible. But I determined to give birth naturally in the hospital where I live. I had my forst son there....with an Iv, demoral (horrible) a spinal epidural and a midwife. I was very young and didn't really know what to expect in labor. My first son was born healthy, but I knew tha next time I wanted to do things diffrently. My mother had a homebirth with me so I felt like I needed to expirence it, yet I wasn't ready or comfortable to do a homebirth myslef. My second… Continue

Hey hun, I didn't know I could do this but you can add a group if you want to start a group. I'm waiting for approval. I started one on misscariage. Any woman who have gone threw one and need support or are going to try again and are scared ect. I hope people join I think it would be great support for those of us who just need someone to relate to what are fears are because of what we've gone threw. So if you want to you can create your own group.ttyl

I planned on a waterbirth but in the moment, standing while pushing just made sense. When you get the notion to change position, don't hesitate, even if you're in a birthing pool. I've included excerpts from my daughter's birth story to better illustrate how it all went down:

*I became more verbal by softly moaning low and deep tones...After a few more contractions and another round of nausea, I finally felt a definite urge to push. When I did so, my membranes did not rupture. I pushed a few times and began to feel you descend. 'Here she comes!' I announced. As if thinking, if I accept and verbally acknowledge this process, things will go more smoothly. But the pressure was unreal...the weight of the amniotic sac, fluids, and you as an 8 pound--11 ounce baby was so intense. My midwife asked me if I wanted her to artificially rupture my membranes. Then I got the OH MY GOD, SHE'S BIG and the intense bearing-down feelings, and I had to accept that regardless of the sensations, I wasn't going to split apart. Another push, okay I feel the burn, it won't be long. Another push, your head was partially out with the membranes still intact. Intervention, sure, please pop my sac, it feels as if I'm trying to pass a 20-pound watermelon, instead of a grapefruit-size head."*

Once membranes were ruptured, it was evident that meconium was passed, so the midwives helped me carefully step out of the pool to birth my daughter's body. I was repositioned on my hands and knees. (the Gaskin Maneuver) Another excerpt follows:

*Firmly believing that birth is a normal process, I wanted to make rational informed decisions. But your birth didn't follow an exactly "normal" path. First, there was the artificial rupture of membranes, then came cord entanglement and severe shoulder dystocia, forcing my midwife to cut your cord and remove a section before I could deliver your shoulders. Most likely, the force of my waters discharging caused your umbilical cord to wrap--like a mink stole--snugly around your shoulders and chest. Linda and Amy worked quickly to manage the situation. With one last monumental push and a primal groan, you were born into this world at 11:54 p.m. I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: The Lord's right hand has done mighty things! The Lord's right hand is lifted high..." (Psalm 118:13-16)*

The work that the midwives quickly accomplished was to help me into flip into a semi-reclined position from hands-and-knees, so they could first attempt the McRoberts Maneuver, then cut & clamp the umbilical cord (she wasn't the ideal position for McRoberts to be successful). Next, (& this maneuver was amazingly effective in both of my births) the Woods Corkscrew Maneuver. This maneuver is often times call the "hands of prayer." Keep in mind all these maneuvers were implemented in a matter of seconds without an episiotomy. These women were well-trained & highly skilled. They never pulled or tugged. I'm sure my daughter & I fared a lot better being at home than we would of in hospital, because the protocols are so different. (See midwives have naturally smaller hands than male OB/GYNs.)

I wish you a happy & joyous birth experience. Knowing that your midwives are well-prepared for such complications should put your mind at ease. As challenging as my births were, I still would not have changed a single thing. (BTW, I had a little bit more trouble with the shoulders of my smaller baby, so I wouldn't worry too much about baby #3 being bigger. Vacuums aren't usually necessary when moms are encouraged to follow their inner voices & move freely.) Below are animation videos to give you a 3-D idea of how all of this works so quickly:

Yes we're planning a homebirth, have a Midwife appointment today actually. I had my son in a birth center with an OB, and while the birth was great and so was his care, I would just rather stay home next time. There is an online Midwife directory for Minnesota that gives information on hospital and homebirth Midwives. I found one that was the closest to me, which is 1 hour and 45 minutes away, I emailed her to ask her if she could or know someone who came out this far away (most work in Minneapolis and I'm about 2 1/2 hours from there). She said she had a 2 hour radius and I fit in that, so we had an interview and we both really liked her. We decided on her before we got pregnant, and we emailed eachother few times a week until I became pregnant.

Thank you. Yes I'm very excited to have another baby. We were originally going to start trying in August, but then decided to start in June and glad we did. We will find out this time again. I want to know if I need a new wardrobe or get out Hunter's old clothes. We should know right before Thanksgiving. I have a nice baby bump now, been taking pictures of it. How is your pregnancy going?
